We are an urban homestead based on natural, holistic and sustainable principles. Our livestock includes chickens & honey bees and we cultivate fruits, vegetables and kitchen herbs.
This is an overall shot of the Garden, showing the 2nd location (final ?) for the bin. In this spot, it will be within the enclosed foraging area for the chickens – close to coop-poop.
This shows some of the progress of making the bin – 48″ wood is notched to stack up to desired height – no rocket science to this diy compost bin.
After only a few months of use, we have this bad-boy almost filled. Need to continue to turn the contents over the winter but we feel good about diverting kitchen scraps into it and look forward to rich compost for the straw bale garden and other plants around the eco-lawn.
(1/20/14) Among other things done today, (MLK, Jr. Day 2014), we worked on compost bin #1. We added kitchen scraps from a café in Downtown Abq. named Cecilia’s Café – she agreed to save a weeks worth of compost material for us to add to our bins. We picked up our 1st supply from her and added it today !
