7 Heavenly Hens GARDEN | blog

We are an urban homestead based on natural, holistic and sustainable principles. Our livestock includes chickens & honey bees and we cultivate fruits, vegetables and kitchen herbs.

Chick brooder

Similar to our actual chicken coop with enclosed run, we plan to build our chick brooder ourselves. And like the model design for our chicken coop, the Wichita Cabin Coop, https://www.facebook.com/WichitaCabinCoop?fref=ts , we are basically copying a design for the brooder too; http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/amferro103s-homemade-chicken-brooder

It has the right size we feel we need for the chicks to not only start off in but also have room to grow to 5/6 weeks and then be ready to head out to the coop. (3′ x 5′) is more than enough space for 7 chicks to be in.

Here are some Sketch-Up models of our brooder we created to get an understanding of how to build it.

And here you can see the “bones” set inside the “shell”.
It should work just fine for the little chicks.

Here is the finished brooder before adding the heating light and filling with wood chips.

The heating lamp has now been attached by a clamp and we’re testing out the temp and placement height.

The brooder has a large, swing open door for keeping curious chicks safe .

The two pieces are finished and ready to go inside our house.

Construction of the brooder involved careful measuring and testing that it was all fitting together. The frame can be taken out of the box for cleaning.

We originally thought about placing the brooder on our dining room table – but changed our minds as this would be too high for our youngest child to keep an eye on the growing chicks.
